Amulree

Cape Cod, drawn from the name of the street.

Project Facts

Project Snapshot

A knockdown rebuild on a 726 square metre block in Tarragindi, and the builder’s own home. The Cape Cod influence is not decoration. Tarragindi takes its name from an islander from the Loyalty Islands who settled here in the nineteenth century, and the house was drawn to answer that – coastal and island influences, light-filled and open.

The Brief

The Client Brief

Amulree is our own home, so the brief was ours to set and ours to live with. A house that reads as Cape Cod without dressing up as one. Room for a family, an office and a display home people could walk through, on a single suburban block.

Design Highlights

What shaped it

Coastal without costume. Cape Cod proportions, weatherboard and gables, drawn for Queensland light rather than a northern winter.

Designed to be lived in for a long time. Built with universal housing design principles, with an accredited livable housing assessor on the team.

Sustainability at the material level. Selections made to an eco-conscious brief, and local sourcing wherever it was possible.

More than a house. It works as a family home, an office, and a display home people can walk through.

Behind the Build

Behind the Build

Demolition to occupancy took five months. Three levels, a lift to the rooftop terrace, a cellar worked into the space beneath the stairwell, a mud room off the secondary entrance, and a play area, pool and cabana across the back.

The entry gable has exposed rafters cut from local timbers – the same island thread that runs through the rest of the house.

Every Project Has a Story

Where the Cape Cod work started

Amulree is where the Cape Cod work started for us. It still reads the way it did the day it finished.
